"Malice In Magadi"

Wednesday, April 15th 2133

---

It has been two days since the 'Bengaluru Farmer's Union' (BFU) blockaded entry into the Magadi townships for non-farmers. Using a slew of combines, E-tractors and portable laser fencing, the organisation has barricaded major roadways passing through the area, including the recently renovated SH-85 expressway - a critical arm for raw material trade between the city and the Mangalore Port. Protesting the Karnataka Land Acquisition Board's (KLAB) recent granting of 10 new construction permits (in Magadi) to Vishyam Cybertex, the union has issued a formal statement condemning KLAB's decision, and has ordered its members to organise around major roadways to bar material transporters & construction workers from entering the townships.

The permits granted to Vishyam Cybertex - South India's premier cybernetics manufacturer - were announced last Sunday via a joint press statement with KLAB. The grant allocates 1000 acres of previously agricultural land in Magadi to expand the company's R&D infrastructure and cybernetics manufacturing capabilities within the city. Basis their statement, the project - if it goes ahead - will add over 20,000 crore rupees and 5000 jobs to the local economy within the next 5 years, making it the largest capital investment in the city since the long-awaited completion of the Metro project by the Bangalore City Council (BCC) in 2112. Allocating the land would also mark a step towards competing with Chinese Cybernetics brands that have long dominated the budget cyber-tech market in India, Vishyam added.

KLAB reported that it has received over 50 fresh applications since January for construction in the Magadi townships and its surrounding villages. While most of these have come from cyber-tech component manufacturers, some property developers and digital service companies (DSCs) have also expressed an interest in establishing new residential areas and warehouse facilities to expand business and cut costs. However, due to the ongoing protests, and pressure from certain political groups, several permits have been put on hold, pending negotiation with the Union's leaders. As of writing, the police and KLAB representatives have arrived at the scene and are attempting to resolve the situation.

Despite explicit government support, controversy has erupted among citizens and certain activist groups over the implications of the permits, given the city's already strained food & water resources. With nearly 60% of Bangalore's water supply coming from other cities, and a general shortage of fertile land, key analysts have warned of food shortages that could cause mass starvation to sweep the capital's lower levels. The union itself has reiterated that any disruptions to farming activities could cause irreparable damage to the agro industry, forcing farmers to hike prices to cover costs, and the city to import grain with more taxpayer's money. It has expressed its stance clearly - all construction permits on agricultural land must be denied or revoked, and protections must be implemented to ensure agricultural sustainability.

BLR Prime reached out spokespersons at KLAB, BFU and Vishyam Cybertex (separately) for comment on the situation, but did not receive responses in time. Although the details of the current negotiations have yet to be revealed, details from an early version of the construction permit issued to Vishyam, that were leaked to a web forum, indicate that KLAB had proposed to relocate farmers to Nelamangala, and offer them compensatory land to ensure their livelihoods weren't affected. Whether this is true, and whether these terms will be brought up with the BFU during the expected negotiations remains to be seen.
